high cholesterol

Cholesterol is a greasy, fatty stuff which is produced by your liver. Cholesterol is important for the formation of cell membranes, vitamin D, and certain hormones. Cholesterol cannot travel throughout your body by itself as it doesn't dissolve in water. Lipoproteins help cholesterol to travel through the bloodstream. There are two types of lipoproteins; low-density lipoproteins(bad cholesterol or LDL) and high-density lipoproteins(good cholesterol or LDL). Eating too many fat foods increases LDL level which in turn leads to high cholesterol.

Symptoms

  • Heart attack, caused by the blockage in one of the arteries that feed the heart.
  • Cholesterol can also lead to stroke, which is caused by a blockage in one of the arteries in the neck or brain.
  • Angina is also a result of having high cholesterol, it is caused by the narrowing of one or more arteries that feed the heart.
  • You may also experience pain on walking, caused by a blockage to an artery that feeds the leg muscles.

Causes

  • Poor diet, especially saturated fat consumption may increase your chances of having high cholesterol.
  • Obesity or being overweight also lead to having high cholesterol.
  • Lack of physical activities can lower your HDL while increasing LDL.
  • Smoking also causes high cholesterol as it damages your blood vessels, making them likely to accumulate fatty deposits.
  • High blood sugar also puts you at risk of high cholesterol.
