Fever: Symptoms, Causes and Home Remedies

Fever is the elevation of body temperature. Body temperature is considered elevated if the temperature goes above the normal oral measurement of 98.6˚F or the normal rectal measurement of 99˚F. However, fever is not considered medically significant until the temperature reaches 100.4˚F. If the body temperature is below 100. 4˚F, then it is considered as low-grade fever. Fever is contagious only if it is caused by viral or bacterial infection.




  • The main symptom of fever is shivering and feeling cold when nobody else does.
  • Headache and aching muscles/joints may also be signs of fever.
  • Dehydration is another indication that your immune system is getting weaker.
  • Weakness and dizziness are often caused by fever.
  • Loss of appetite is very common when you are suffering from fever.
  • You may also notice excessive sweating when you have elevated temperature.



  • Viruses and bacteria are the most common reasons for fever.
  • Typical infections that cause fever include those of throat, ear, lung, bladder, and more.
  • Some medications also make you feel feverish.
  • Fever can also be caused by excessive exposure of the skin to sunlight.


Home Remedies To Cure Fatigue

  • Soak a clean cloth in cold water, squeeze out the excess water and then sponge your hands, groin, feet, and armpit. This will help you reduce your body temperature.
  • You can also place a damp cloth on your forehead. Change the cloth pieces regularly after few minutes. This method is beneficial to bring down your temperature if you've high fever.




  • Basil acts as an antibiotic and it will help reduce fever quickly.
  • Add 20 basil leaves and a teaspoon of crushed ginger to a cup of water, boil them until the solution gets reduced to half. Then add little honey to this solution and drink it 2-3 times daily for three days.



  • Ginger is a natural antiviral and antibacterial agent. It helps to expel the heat and reduce the body temperature.
  • Drink ginger tea by adding a half teaspoon of crushed ginger to a cup of boiling water.
  • You can also mix  one teaspoon of ginger juice with one teaspoon of honey and lemon juice. Consume this 3-4 times a day.




  • Turmeric has antiviral, antifungal, anti bacterial, and antioxindant properties. This helps your body to fight any infection.
  • Add half a teaspoon of turmeric powder and one-fourth teaspoon of pepper powder to a cup of hot milk. Drink this mixture twice a day.

Gingivitis is a disease of the gums which causes inflammation and swelling due to the bacteria and germs that form and reside in the teeth. It occurs because of bad tooth hygiene and not taking proper care of the gums and teeth. If the disease is not treated on time it can worsen and lead to serious complications. It is actually a medical problem which is not destructive and can be cured by regular flossing and brushing of teeth. It becomes a problem only when ignored for a long time. There are symptoms to look out for which will indicate that you have gingivitis.


  • Most obvious symptom is redness and swelling of gums which look puffy and on touching feel tender and kind of hurt. It is an alarm bell that it is not normal and must be looked into.
  • When you brush your teeth and you see blood coming out of the teeth and gums, it is an indicator that you may have this disease.
  • The gums are set in the jaws and if you see them receding it is a sign that something is wrong
  • Bad breath is also a major sign and usually ignored as they feel it is normal and nothing to worry.


  • When food particles get stuck in the space between the edges of the gum and the place where the gums actually attach to the teeth, and are not cleaned well.
  • Plaque is normal to be formed on the teeth but can be cleaned by regular brushing. If ignored accumulation of plaque is a reason for the disease.
  • Breeding plaque and bacteria cause swelling of the gums

Home remedies


  • Add half teaspoon of salt to lukewarm water and rinse every morning and evening until the puffiness disappears.
  • Make a paste of by mixing half teaspoon of salt with mustard oil and massage it on the gums for around two minutes in a circular motion and then gargle with lukewarm water. For best results, do it two to three times a day.

  • Effective remedy as it reduces decaying of the tooth by neutralizing the acids and at the same time works as an antiseptic hence heals.
  • Make a paste with water and a quarter teaspoon of baking soda and apply it to the gums. Leave it on for two minutes and wash with warm water. Do this thrice a week.



  • We all know turmeric is the best healer and can almost heal all cuts, wounds and other diseases due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
  • Mix half teaspoon f turmeric with half teaspoon each of salt and mustard oil and massage on gums twice in a day.

Home Remedies for Diarrhea
Increase the intake of yoghurt

·      Yoghurt contains powerful bacteria, like Bifidobacterium and lactobacillus acidophilus, that can cure diarrhea.
·      It contains probiotics that reduce diarrhea from antibiotics
·      The person with diarrhea should consume at least two bowls of yoghurt to get relief.
Fenugreek Seeds
·      Since these seeds contain large amounts of mucilage, they are highly recommended.
·      Individuals with diarrhea should combine one teaspoon of these seeds with one tablespoon of yoghurt and chew them together.
·      Also, half-teaspoon of these fenugreek seeds and cumin seeds can be roasted and combined with curd (two tablespoons) and are stirred well. This mixture should be consumed three times in a day.
Apple Cider Vinegar
·      One teaspoon of this should be added to a glass containing water.
·      This solution should be consumed at least one or two times in a day for relief.
Chamomile Tea

·      A teaspoon of flowers called chamomile and a teaspoon of peppermint leaves are soaked for 10 minutes in a vessel that contains boiling water.
·      The mixture should be strained and the tea should be taken in for few times during the day.
·      Green tea helps in improving the functionality of the digestive system.

·      Half a teaspoon of turmeric powder should be mixed with a glass of warm water.
·      The mixture should be stirred well and should be taken in immediately and quickly because the turmeric powder tends to quickly reach the bottom.
·      This mixture should be taken in at least two or three times in a day.
Alternatively, one teaspoon of turmeric powder can be added to one teaspoon to one tablespoon of yoghurt or applesauce This mixture should be consumed at least two or three times in a day.

Home Remedies To Cure Stomach Ache




  • Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of ginger promote digestion and help reduce stomach ache. In addition, ginger decreases the production of free radicals and thus helps neutralize stomach acids.
  • Cut a ginger root into slices and add it to a cup of water. Boil it for 3-4 minutes and then simmer for another 3-4 minutes.
  • Strain it and add little honey. Drink this 3-4 times daily to improve digestion and ease stomach ache.



  • Fennel seeds are a great remedy for stomach ache caused due to indigestion. Fennel seeds have anti-microbial, pain reducing, diuretic, and carminative properties.
  • Mix one teaspoon of fennel seed powder to a cup of water and boil it for 7-8 minutes. Allow it to cool and strain it. Add little honey and drink it. 



  • Asefetida, also known as hing, is helpful for treating stomach ache due to its antispasmodic and antiflatulent properties.
  • Add a pinch of asefetida to a glass of water and drink it. Repeat 3-4 times a day.
  • Alternatively, add a pinch of asefetida and salt to a glass of buttermilk and drink it 1-2 times a day.

  • Baking soda and  lemon are very helpful if you've stomach ache due to infection. Baking soda relieves bloating and lemon removes free radicals from the body.
  • Squeeze a fresh lemon and add its juice, one teaspoon of baking soda and 1/4th teaspoon of salt to a cup of warm water. Drink this solution quickly. Repeat 3-4 times a day.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is combination of physical, psychological, or emotional disturbances that occur during certain days of the menstrual cycle, usually, a few days before the menses. It affects up to 85% of the menstruating women and the severity of PMS symptoms varies from woman to woman.




  • You may experience abdominal pain or bloating.
  • Sore or tender breasts is also a sign of PMS.
  • You may have food cravings.
  • Constipation, diarrhea are also some of the symptoms of PMS.

  • Chemical changes in the brain: Hormone changes affect the levels of certain chemicals in the brain, such as serotonin. Fluctuations or reduction in serotonin levels cause mood changes, depression, and sadness.
  • Poor diet; eating too much or too less contribute to PMS symptoms.
  • External factors such as stress, depression, weight gain, lack of exercise, all make your PMS symptoms worse.


Home Remedies To Cure Premenstrual Syndrome




  • Ginger is an excellent home remedy for PMS. It helps reduce the severity of premenstrual syndrome.
  • Add one teaspoon of chopped ginger to a cup of boiling water. Leave it for 5 minutes, strain and drink 3-4 cups daily at least for a week before your menses. 


Apple Cider Vinegar


  • Apple cider vinegar is an effective home remedy for reducing some of the PMS symptoms such as bloating, cramping, fatigue, headaches, etc.
  • Mix 2 teaspoons of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar and little organic honey to a glass of water. Drink this mixture twice a day.




  • The omega-3 fatty acids of flax-seeds is very helpful for reducing PMS symptoms such as sore breasts, depression, anxiety, headaches, and more.
  • Eat 1 tablespoon of powdered flax-seeds daily.
  • You can also include flax-seeds in your daily diet.



  • Chasteberry or vitex, help to regulate prolactin, a hormone that is believed to be contributed factor in PMS symptoms.
  • Consume about 400 mg of standard extract of vitex daily.
  • Alternatively, take 100 mg of vitex extract twice daily.
  • Another option is, take 40 drops of vitex tincture daily.


Calcium/Magnesium rich foods


  • Calcium helps balancing hormones and relieves PMS symptoms. Magnesium reduces symptoms like sore breasts, bloating, etc.
  • Regularly consume calcium/magnesium rich foods such as beans, nuts, bananas, green leafy vegetables.

Migraines are characterized by more intense and severe headache often accompanied by several symptoms in addition to headache. The duration of a migraine attack can often fluctuate, usually migraine attacks will last at least 4-5 hours. It is better to consult a physician if you experience migraine symptoms for more than three days.




  • Moderate to severe headache. It can affect the whole head or can shift from one side to the other.

  • Poor diet; consumption of salty foods, aged cheeses, processed foods may contribute to migraines.
  • Alcohol consumption or caffeinated beverages also trigger migraines.
  • Stress, change in sleep-wake pattern also prompt migraine.
  • High-pitch noise, bright lights, beaming sun glare can also induce migraine.
  • Intense physical excretion also leads to migraines.
  • Certain medications such as oral contraceptives, vasodilators can provoke migraines.


Home Remedies To Cure Migraine 


Apple Cider Vinegar


  • Having rich nutritional properties, apple cider vinegar helps relieve migraine.
  • Add one tablespoon each of apple cider vinegar and honey to a glass of water. Drink this mixture daily to prevent migraine as well as to treat migraine.



  • Ginger is an effective remedy for migraines. Ginger successfully blocks prostaglandins, which are lipid compounds that stimulate muscle contractions, affect hormones, control blood vessel inflammation in the brain.
  • Chew some pieces of ginger regularly.
  • Alternatively, add few slices of ginger to one and half a cup of boiling water. Leave it for 10 minutes and strain the water, add little honey and lemon. Drink this few times a day.

Ice Pack


  • Ice pack is the most simplest and easiest home remedy for getting rid of migraine. It has a numbing effect that reduces pain.
  • Just wrap few ice cubes in a clean cloth and place it on forehead and back of the neck for 10-15 minutes. Repeat at regular intervals.

Cayenne Pepper

  • Cayenne pepper is an effective cure for migraine as it stimulates blood circulation. Also, it contains a painkiller compound called capsaicin.
  • Add half a teaspoon of cayenne pepper to a cup of warm water. Add little lemon and honey to enhance taste. Drink it as and when you need.
