Chicken pox - Things not to overlook

What is it?

An infectious disease caused by virus - Herpes Varicella Zoster virus resulting in mild fever and a rash of itchy inflamed pimples which turn to blisters and then loose scabs. It mainly affects children but can also be rarely found in adults.

  • This is the most contagious disease and spread by droplets from a sneeze or cough, or by contact with the clothing, bed linens.
  • The blisters formed might ooze which can infect a healthy person.
  • The onset of symptoms is 10 to 21 days after the virus has entered the body.


The symptoms are usually divided into two stages, one before the rashes appear, second after the rashes appear. Below are the details:

Before the rashes appear

  1. Malaise - A general feeling of being unwell (malaise)
  2. Fever
  3. Aching muscles
  4. Loss of appetite
  5. Occasional nausea

After the rashes appear

  1. Red small spots appear. Spots may be in some parts of the body or all over the body and it differs from person to person.
  2. They form clusters and blisters build up
  3. They can spread to face, hand, chest, limbs, scalp, behind the ears, stomach.
  4. Within 48 hours of blister formation they start drying up and become itchy
  5. Within a span of 8-10 days scabs are formed which fall by themselves.


Home Remedies

Epsom Salt

This is not actually a salt but more of a mineral compound. It relieves the itching and contains sulfate and magnesium that help to reduce inflammation too. 

  • Prepare a bathtub with lukewarm water. Add 2 cups of Epsom Salt to it.
  • Make sure that it is mixed well. When salt is dissolved completely, soak in it.
  • Stay in the water for about 15-20 minutes. 
  • Pat dry the body lightly.
  • Epsom Salt can be lightly mixed with water and applied too. Rinse with plain water.


Drink herbal tea

You can make a homemade herbal tea that is known for boosting immunity and fighting chickenpox. 

  • Take mixed herbal tea bags. You can also use leaves of chamomile, holy basil, marigold and lemon balm.
  • Boil 1/12 cup of water. When water is reduced add these herbs.
  • Cover with a lid and let the herbs soak. Add some honey to it.
  • Drink this twice a day.
  • You can also cool this tea and use it for bathing. In this case, don’t add honey. 


Lavender oil

Lavender oil soothes itching and helps the marks of the pox go away.

  • Dilute a few drops of lavender essential oil with any carrier oil. Ideally, you can use coconut, olive or even almond oil. Mix the two well.
  • Apply on body. Don’t wash off.
  • Repeat 2-3 times a day.
  • You can also take 10 drops of lavender and chamomile each. Mix in lukewarm water.
  • Bath in this water every day. 


Coconut water

Coconut water has soothing properties, making it ideal for patients who have chickenpox.

  • Take fresh coconut water. Apply it all over the body using a cotton ball.
  • You can also mix half coconut water and regular water. Bathe or soak in the same.
  • Drink 2 glasses of coconut water every day. It will soothe the stomach.
  • You can also eat the jelly of the coconut.

Hydrogen peroxide 

Hydrogen peroxide helps to disinfect and heal up the surfaced sore to spread or worsen.

  • Take 1 tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide. 
  • You will also need some cotton balls, cotton pads, or facial tissue
  • Soak the cotton balls in hydrogen peroxide
  • Place it directly on the store. Hold for a few seconds.
  • Then dab it again and re-apply. Let the ball stay on the area for about five minutes
  • You can then rinse it off using the same ball.


Vitamin E and C foods

The next step here would be eating more of Vitamin E and C foods that fight cold sores. Foods that you can eat here include

  • Red berries, Kiwi, broccoli, tomatoes, red and green peppers, spinach, etc.
  • You can also consume nuts, leafy greens, avocado and whole grains
  • Vitamin enriched oil can be applied on the sore.
  • Almond oil too is rich in vitamin E and can be used.



Cornstarch aids in drying up the cold sores thus hastening the recuperation process.

  • 1 spoon of fresh cornstarch or corn flour. Mix it with same quantity of water.
  • Apply on the cold sores. Let it dry completely. 
  • Rinse off.
  • To the same mixture add 1-2 drops of either tea tree, peppermint or even eucalyptus oil.
  • Mix well and apply. Wash off when dry.


Lemon balm

The use of lemon balm is a quick remedy for dealing with cold stores

  • Take any organic lemon balm for lips. Apply on lips and cold sore.
  • Make sure the balm is free of harmful preservatives
  • You can also use tea tree based lemon balm.
  • Take leaves of lemon balm. Crush and puree them. Apply on cold sore.
  • Use lemon balm oil mixed with cornstarch.

  2. Surgical procedures to the face, such as a facelift, jaw surgery, or nose surgery
  3. A head injury causing both eyes to swell and blacken
  4. Allergic reactions or bites


  1. Initially, the swelling and discoloration may be mild. The eye may start off slightly reddened, then progress to a darker shade.
  2. Later, the skin around the eye becomes deep violet, yellow, green, or black in color.
  3. Swelling increases as discoloration progresses.
  4. Over the course of a few days, the area becomes lighter and the swelling decreases.

Home Remedies


Cold tea bags

  • Cold tea bags are known for soothing the eye and reducing the puffiness of the same. You can simple take the tea bags and then put it into the freezer. 
  • There’s is no need to thaw them. It doesn’t matter if the tea bag is used too. 
  • Now lie down and put these bags on your eyes and sit back for a while. 
  • Put them back in the refrigerator and then repeat again.


Raw potato slices

Raw potato slices are known for lightening the impact of the black eye. Often, black eye is also accompanied with puffiness, pain and swelling along with the darkening of the skin around these areas. 

  • Potato contains a starch that helps to not only lighten your skin but it also provides anti-inflammation benefits. 
  • It helps with your swelling is reduced too along with blackness. 
  • Just take two slices of the potatoes and put on each eye. Yes probably only one eye is black but why not pamper the other! 


Cold spoon

This is a very old and quick remedy that has been used for combating tired eyes and puffiness. The reason it works with black eyes too is because you don’t have to worry about too much preparation here. 

  • Just take 2 cold spoons and put in the deep freezer. 
  • Then take the back of the spoon and place it gently over the eyes. Let the cold metal work against the skin. 
  • Doing so helps to reduce the exertion caused on the eyes and helps the eye muscles to relax. 
  • Do this 4-5 times a day to reduce black eye problems.


Calendula or marigold 

The petals of the calendula or the marigold have been used for centuries to reduce pain and swelling and also brighten up the skin. And that’s why this remedy is quite effective in treating black eye. 


  • Just take a few petals of the calendula. Remember to use the fresh calendula as the results are more effective. 
  • Now place them in a cup of boiling hot water. Turn the gas off and cover the cup with a lid. 
  • Let the liquid stay outside for about 15 minutes or till the petals become withered and the water has extracted all the goodness from it. 
  • Now let the liquid cool in the refrigerator. Use a clean cloth or cotton ball to place this cold liquid over the eye and give a light compress.

Breast cancer starts when cells in the breast begin to grow out of control. These cells further accumulate to form a tumor that can be seen on an x-ray or felt as a lump.   5. Discharge from nipples, sometimes the discharge might be blood
  6. The nipple changes in appearance; it may become sunken or inverted, peeling of the skin.
  7. Change in the size and shape of the breast

Home Remedies


  • Known for its high antibiotic properties, garlic can contain the spread of cancerous cells.
  • You can swallow 2-3 cloves of garlic on empty stomach in the morning
  • Add more raw garlic to your diet in forms of salads
  • Additionally, you can also mix 1 spoon of garlic paste with a spoon of honey. Consume this every day.




  • Raw broccoli can be washed and blanched. Mix it with some apple cider vinegar, garlic and lemon juice and zest. Eat one bowl twice a day.
  • Broccoli soup can be made, using the stem. Boil in a pressure cooker or steamer. The stem has crucial nutrients that fight free radicals.



Both raw and fresh forms of turmeric aid in fighting breast cancer. 

  • Take a thick 2-inch piece of fresh turmeric. Puree it and mix with 2 spoons of lemon juice. Have on empty stomach 
  • Puree a thick 2-inch piece of fresh turmeric with some beetroot, carrots and tomatoes. All ingredients are antioxidant rich.
  • You can increase your intake of dry turmeric in foods to prevent breast cancer
  • 1 cup of warm milk, mixed with a spoon of honey and turmeric can be taken too



A study by Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism indicates tomatoes reduce risks of breast cancer as they contain Lycopene. 

  • Slice a tomato and have it with your meals. Add garlic to the salad for added benefits.
  • You can also squeeze the juice of 2 tomatoes and drink everyday

Probiotics - Probiotics work wonders in maintaining a healthy digestive system and overall health. The gut bacteria of the mother impacts the immunity of the baby throughout. Thus, the major credit of the way your immunity works goes to your mother. If you are frequently prone to allergies include probiotics in your meal twice a day. 

  • Include a cup of yogurt in your meal. Flavored yogurt can also be opted if plain isn't much pleasing.
  • Supplements of probiotics in the form of capsules are also available.
  • Pickles are loaded with probiotics since they are preserved for a long time


Turmeric - One of the wonder spice, turmeric has a lot of benefits including allergy remedies. 


  • Add extra turmeric instead of normal amounts to the dishes.
  • A tsp of turmeric mixed in a glass of warm milk, consumed at night has excellent results


Local honey - This is more effective than the processed honey. 

  • Have a teaspoon of local honey every morning with empty stomach
  • Mix one teaspoon of local honey with 1 teaspoon of lemon juice in a glass of warm water.

Turmeric - Due to it's anti-inflammatory properties turmeric comes as a boon to rheumatoid arthritis. 

  • Mix 1 tea spoon of turmeric is a glass of warm milk and drink it at night before going to bed. Make sure this is done on alternate days, as daily consumption might sometimes generate side effects like heat.
  • Drinking fresh turmeric juice is the most effective than in any other form
  • Consuming 500-1000 mg of turmeric capsule thrice per day is also an option.

Epsom salt - Due to high amounts of magnesium Epsom salt is used as a pain reliever. 

  • Add 1 cup of Epsom salt in a big bowl of water and soak the area of the body which is sored due to pain. 
  • Alternatively, you can take bath using this water if the area of pain is not convenient enough to soak.

Cinnamon - It is enriched with anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, thus acts as a pain reliever

  • 1/2 tsp of Cinnamon mixed in 1 tsp of honey should be added to one glass of warm water. Drink this every morning with an empty stomach.


Extra virgin olive oil - Lubrication is an important aspect to be taken care of when arthritis is diagnosed. Extra virgin olive oil acts as an excellent lubricant.

  • 2-3 tablespoon of oil can be massaged on the sore joints 2-3 times a day. Make sure the pressure applied during massage is gentle.
