Can meditation raise IQ?

  • Deep meditation slows the activity of the brain. At the slower brainwave frequencies (alpha, theta and delta), the brain has increased learning capacity and plasticity (ability to reorganize itself). By practicing focused attention meditation (focus of the attention on a single object, sound or thought), the individual strengthens control over the workings of the brain.
  • As the ability to focus attention is enhanced, the ability to learn increases because of attention to what is being learned (as opposed to the daydreaming, partially-present state we are often in).
  • Another factor perhaps less directly related to IQ but certainly affecting test results, is stress. When a person is stressed, the ability to concentrate decreases, and it is more difficult to control the thought processes and effectively solve problems.
