Is bed wetting a common problem your child faces? Know these facts

Bed-wetting in children is the unintentional (involuntary) discharge of urine during the night. 

Causes

A small bladder - The child's bladder may not be developed enough to hold urine produced during the night and a full bladder may not wake the child. This happens when the nerves that control the bladder are slow to mature.

Hormonal imbalance - During childhood, some kids don't produce enough anti-diuretic hormone (ADH) to slow nighttime urine production.

Stressful events - Events like having a new younger sibling, starting a new school, or sleeping away from home may trigger bed-wetting.

Urinary tract infection - A UTI can sometimes cause bed wetting, which persists only until the infection prevails.

Sleep apnea - Sometimes bed-wetting is a sign of obstructive sleep apnea, a condition in which the child's breathing is interrupted during sleep — often due to inflamed or enlarged tonsils or adenoids.

Diabetes - For a child who's usually dry at night, bed-wetting may be the first sign of diabetes. 

Chronic constipation - The same muscles are used to control urine and stool elimination. When constipation is long term, these muscles can become dysfunctional and contribute to bed-wetting at night.

Symptoms

  1. Wetting during the day
  2. Frequency, urgency, or burning on urination
  3. Straining, dribbling, or other unusual symptoms with urination
  4. Cloudy or pinkish urine or blood stains on underpants
  5. Inability to control bowel movements
  6. Constipation
  7. Other signs and symptoms may include snoring, frequent ear and sinus infections, sore throat, or daytime drowsiness.

Home Remedies

 
Olive oil
  • Heat some olive oil and rub it on the lower abdomen of the child.
  • The heating effect of the olive oil will help develop better bladder control
Fennel seeds
  • To a glass of warm milk, add 1 tsp of fennel seed powder
  • Add 1 spoon of sugar to it (Can add 2 if needed)
  • Give this to the child before he/she goes to bed
Cinnamon
 
  • Cinnamon can be rightly called as the wonder bark due to various health benefits.
  • Make the child chew half an inch of cinnamon bark every day. 
  • If not, cinnamon powder mixed with sugar can be sprinkled on his favorite sandwich/toast/muffin 
 
Gooseberries
 
  • Extract the pulp of gooseberries and sprinkle some pepper powder on it.
  • Make the child consume this before going to bed
  • Simply mix some gooseberry powder in a glass of milk and give to your child before going to bed

Clove

  • Strain this and mix a tsp of honey to it

Mustard Oil
 
 
  • Take 1 tbsp of mustard oil and heat it
  • Add a pinch of camphor to it and mix thoroughly
  • Massage it on the chest to feel the warmth and get quick relief
 
Ginger
 
  • Mix equal proportions of ginger juice, pomegranate and honey thoroughly. Consume this twice a day
  • Soak 2 tsp of dried fenugreek seeds(methi seeds) in 1tbsp each of ginger juice and honey, overnight. Consume this in the morning before breakfast.
Coffee
 
 
  • Caffeine in coffee is a bronchodilator which releases the spasms caused in the lungs/airways. It helps clear the airways thus, relieving the ill effects of Asthma. Black coffee is preferred over the coffee with milk since it acts faster.

The common cold is a minor illness, which happens because of the virus. With more than 200 types of  virus around, the common cold keeps adding to the misery. Due to the common cold, many people are forced to stay back home. It is also quite contagious. On the whole, research shows that Americans have 1 billion colds a year.

 

Symptoms

Common cold symptoms include-

  • Sneezing
  • Coughing
  • Nose block
  • Headaches
  • Light fever
  • Body ache
  • Feeling of being unwell
  • Irritability
  • Rashes in some cases

 

Causes 

As mentioned above, common cold is caused because of viruses. One of the most common types around has to be the rhinovirus, which is responsible for about 10% to 40% of colds. Besides this, coronavirus is the major cause of about 20% of cases. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and parainfluenza virus lead to about 10% of colds each. 

 

Home Remedies

 

The common cold is not really serious but it does create havoc. You feel symptoms of being tired and fatigued along with nose block, constant sneezing, etc. Here are some simple remedies for dealing with this-

 

Inhale steam

For this remedy, you can either use a professional steamer or even heat water over a big pot or pan on the gas. Just make sure that the water is boiling hot. You would also need a big towel to cover your face and prevent steam from escaping.

    •    Take a steamer or pan of hot water. Cover head with the towel. Inhale this steam and exhale deeply.

    •    To this steam add a few drops of eucalyptus or tea tree oil. You can also add any other essential oil. These oils sooth the inflated nasal passage and clear mucus.

    •    You can also run a hot shower in the bathroom. Then inhale the steam.

    •    Right after inhaling steam, blow your nose. This will get rid of mucus.

 

Mustard Oil

A common and yet easily available home remedy for common cold is mustard oil.

    •    Heat mustard oil. When bearable temperature apply on nose, neck and back.

    •    Apply this oil on feet and massage. Cover with socks. This improves breathability.

    •    Burn some garlic cloves in mustard oil. Strain and use this oil for massaging.

    •    You can also inhale the steam of the burning mustard oil.

 

Nasal Spray

You can easily buy a salt or saline water nasal spray in the market. You can make it at home using-

    •    Mixing 3 teaspoons of iodide-free salt with 1 teaspoon baking soda.

    •    Place this liquid in an airtight container.

    •    Now add one teaspoon of this mixture to 8 ounces of lukewarm boiled or distilled water.

    •    Use a few drops of this water inside the nasal passage

    •    Put head back in an upward tilt. This allows the nasal drop to reach the back of your nasal passage.

 

Vitamin C

Having a lot of vitamin C is recommended as home remedy for common cold.

    •    Eat more of oranges, sweet lime and even grapefruit. 

    •    Take out a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice. Drink twice a day.

    •    Avoid the packaged ones.

    •    You can also mix honey, lemon juice with warm water. Drink this 2-3 times.

Apple Cider Vinegar - Being used for multiple purposes, this is also best utilized to overcome allergies. 

  • Simply mix a tsp of Apple Cider Vinegar in a glass of water and consume this every morning. This not just prevents the allergies from setting up, but also cleanses the lymph nodes, decreasing the mucus production.

 

Probiotics - Probiotics work wonders in maintaining a healthy digestive system and overall health. The gut bacteria of the mother impacts the immunity of the baby throughout. Thus, the major credit of the way your immunity works goes to your mother. If you are frequently prone to allergies include probiotics in your meal twice a day. 

  • Include a cup of yogurt in your meal. Flavored yogurt can also be opted if plain isn't much pleasing.
  • Supplements of probiotics in the form of capsules are also available.
  • Pickles are loaded with probiotics since they are preserved for a long time

 

Turmeric - One of the wonder spice, turmeric has a lot of benefits including allergy remedies. 

 

  • Add extra turmeric instead of normal amounts to the dishes.
  • A tsp of turmeric mixed in a glass of warm milk, consumed at night has excellent results

 

Local honey - This is more effective than the processed honey. 

  • Have a teaspoon of local honey every morning with empty stomach
  • Mix one teaspoon of local honey with 1 teaspoon of lemon juice in a glass of warm water.

What is Arthritis?

Types of Arthritis: 

Osteoarthritis

The most common type of arthritis, involves wear-and-tear damage to your joint's cartilage — the hard, slick coating on the ends of bones.   1. Injury (leading to osteoarthritis),

  3. Any direct and indirect effect of infections (bacterial and viral),
  4. An auto-immune disorder (Process where body's fighter cells, treat body's own cells as threat)

 

Symptoms

  1. Pain

  3. Swelling
  4. Redness
  5. Decreased range of motion
  6. Fatigue
  7. Loss of energy
  8. Lack of appetite
  9. Low grade fever
  10. Chest pain while breathing in
  11. Dry eyes and mouth
  12. Burning and itching of the eye; and discharge from the eye
  13. Nodules beneath the skin
  14. Numbness, tingling or burning in the hands and feet
  15. Sleep disturbances

Home Remedies 

 

Turmeric - Due to it's anti-inflammatory properties turmeric comes as a boon to rheumatoid arthritis. 

  • Mix 1 tea spoon of turmeric is a glass of warm milk and drink it at night before going to bed. Make sure this is done on alternate days, as daily consumption might sometimes generate side effects like heat.
  • Drinking fresh turmeric juice is the most effective than in any other form
  • Consuming 500-1000 mg of turmeric capsule thrice per day is also an option.
 

Epsom salt - Due to high amounts of magnesium Epsom salt is used as a pain reliever. 

  • Add 1 cup of Epsom salt in a big bowl of water and soak the area of the body which is sored due to pain. 
  • Alternatively, you can take bath using this water if the area of pain is not convenient enough to soak.
 

Cinnamon - It is enriched with anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, thus acts as a pain reliever

  • 1/2 tsp of Cinnamon mixed in 1 tsp of honey should be added to one glass of warm water. Drink this every morning with an empty stomach.

 

Extra virgin olive oil - Lubrication is an important aspect to be taken care of when arthritis is diagnosed. Extra virgin olive oil acts as an excellent lubricant.

  • 2-3 tablespoon of oil can be massaged on the sore joints 2-3 times a day. Make sure the pressure applied during massage is gentle.
