pigmentation

Skin pigmentation basically affects the colour of the skin. Skin gets colour from a pigment called melanin. Certain cells make melanin and when these cells become unhealthy or get damaged, it affects the production of melanin. When there is a excess production of melanin, skin gets darker and when there is too little melanin, skin gets lighter and causes white patches.

Symptoms

  • Skin darkening or lightening is the main symptom of skin pigmentation.
  • You can also find patches on the skin. These patches can vary in size and found anywhere on the body.

Causes

  • Excess exposure to sunlight can cause skin pigmentation. When the skin is exposed to harmful ultraviolet rays, inflammation occurs. High inflammation level is responsible for the production of inflammatory mediators and these hormones cause skin reaction and contributes to higher production of melanin.
  • Any kind of skin damage, including pimple, cuts, etc., lead to excess melanin production and hence skin pigmentation.
  • Improper hair removal and allergic reactions eventually cause skin pigmentation.
  • Pregnancy or hormonal changes boost melanin production.
