Nosebleed: Causes, Symptoms and Home Remedies

Medical term for nosebleed is epistaxis. Nosebleeds are more common due to the large number of blood vessels present in the nose. Bleeding usually occurs from only one nostril, it can overflow into the other nostril if the bleeding is heavy.

 

Symptoms

 

  • You may experience nose irritation.
  • A person having excessive nosebleed may have dizziness.
  • Weakness and fainting are also signs of  severe nosebleed.
  • Confusion is also often caused by  nosebleed.
  •  

Causes

 

  • Dry air causes nosebleed.
  • Bacterial infections and allergies also cause nosebleed.
  • Nose picking also contributes to nose-bleeding.
  • Acute sinusitis, chronic sinusitis may also lead to nosebleed.
  • Hormonal changes, stress, and psychological issues may also cause nosebleed.
  • Alcohol consumption, cocaine use are also dangerous if you want to avoid nose-bleeding.
  • Some chemicals such as ammonia, or nasal sprays, use of blood thinning medications also cause nose-bleeding.
  • You may also notice nosebleed when you get cold.
  • You may have nosebleed during pregnancy.
  • In few cases, nasal tumor, nasal surgery, or leukemia also causes nosebleed.

Cold Compress

Cold compress

  • Cold compress is an effective remedy for stopping a bleeding nose. Cold temperature compresses blood vessels faster and makes blood flow slower.
  • Wrap few ice cubes in a clean cloth. Sit upright and tilt your head back, apply the ice pack slowly across your nose bridge for 10-15 minutes. Repeat as needed.

Apple Cider Vinegar

 

  • Apple cider vinegar is an excellent home remedy for stopping nosebleed. It helps prevent the excess blood loss and seal the broken blood vessels quickly.
  • Dip a cotton ball in apple cider vinegar and press it gently against the nostril. Then place the cotton ball lightly in your nostril for 10 minutes to stop the bleeding.
  • You can take preventative measure for nosebleed by drinking the mixture of a glass of water and 2 teaspoons of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar, three times a day.

Onion

  • Onion is an excellent clotting agent and hence it is very effective for stopping nosebleed.
  • Cut an onion into slices. Press one slice against nostril and inhale the fumes, it will immediately stop the bleeding.
  • Alternatively, put 2-3 drops of fresh onion juice in each nostril.

Coriander

 

  • Coriander is an Ayurvedic remedy for stopping nosebleed. Its soothing effect is very helpful for stopping nosebleed.
  • Put 4-5 drops of coriander juice or oil in each nostril, bleeding will stop within minutes.
  • Alternatively, make a paste using coriander leaves and apply it to your forehead.

Apple cider vinegar

 

    •    Antibacterial properties of apple cider vinegar helps treat sore throat.

    •    Add one teaspoon each of lemon juice and honey and one tablespoon of unfiltered, raw apple cider vinegar to a cup of warm water. Drink it 2-3 times daily.

    •    You can also gargle with apple cider vinegar solution; add one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and one teaspoon of salt to a cup of warm water and gargle with it several times a day.

Cinnamon

    •    Cinnamon is an excellent remedy for sore throat caused due to common cold.

    •    Mix one teaspoon each of cinnamon powder and black pepper with a glass of warm water. Strain this mixture and gargle with it several times a day.

Garlic

    •    Consume 2-3 raw garlic cloves daily.

  • Strain it and add little honey. Drink this 3-4 times daily to improve digestion and ease stomach ache.

  • Fennel seeds are a great remedy for stomach ache caused due to indigestion. Fennel seeds have anti-microbial, pain reducing, diuretic, and carminative properties.
  • Mix one teaspoon of fennel seed powder to a cup of water and boil it for 7-8 minutes. Allow it to cool and strain it. Add little honey and drink it.

  • Asefetida, also known as hing, is helpful for treating stomach ache due to its antispasmodic and antiflatulent properties.
  • Add a pinch of asefetida to a glass of water and drink it. Repeat 3-4 times a day.
  • Alternatively, add a pinch of asefetida and salt to a glass of buttermilk and drink it 1-2 times a day.

  • Baking soda and  lemon are very helpful if you've stomach ache due to infection. Baking soda relieves bloating and lemon removes free radicals from the body.

Peppermint

  • Due to anti-inflammatory property, peppermint helps reduce membrane swelling in the lining of the nostrils and throat and hence promotes easy breathing. It is a best remedy for temporary snoring due to cold or allergy.
  • Add few drops of peppermint oil to a glass of water and gargle with it before going to bed.
  • Also, rub peppermint oil into the lower portions of your nose before going to bed. Repeat daily until you see the desired result.

 

Clarified Butter

 

  • Clarified butter opens up the nasal passage and helps you breath freely.
  • Slightly warm clarified butter and put 2-3 drops into each nostril using a dropper. Repeat daily before going to bed and again soon after waking up in the morning.

 

Turmeric

 

  • Antiseptic and antibiotic properties of turmeric can treat inflammation and reduces heavy snoring. Use turmeric with milk for better result.
  • Mix 2 teaspoons of turmeric powder with a glass of warm milk and drink it about 30 minutes before going to bed. Repeat daily until you stop snoring.

Cardamom

  • Cardamom is an excellent expectorant and decongestant agent and it effectively opens up the blocked nasal passage. Easy and uninterrupted air passage reduces the possibility of snoring.

Garlic

 

  • Garlic prevents mucus from building up in the nasal passage. It is helpful if you are snoring due to sinus blockage,

Skin pigmentation basically affects the colour of the skin. Skin gets colour from a pigment called melanin. Certain cells make melanin and when these cells become unhealthy or get damaged, it affects the production of melanin. When there is a excess production of melanin, skin gets darker and when there is too little melanin, skin gets lighter and causes white patches.

 

Symptoms

 

  • Skin darkening or lightening is the main symptom of skin pigmentation.
  • You can also find patches on the skin. These patches can vary in size and found anywhere on the body.

 

Causes

 

  • Excess exposure to sunlight can cause skin pigmentation. When the skin is exposed to harmful ultraviolet rays, inflammation occurs. High inflammation level is responsible for the production of inflammatory mediators and these hormones cause skin reaction and contributes to higher production of melanin.

  • Squeeze a lemon and collect the juice in a bowl. Add little honey to it and apply the mixture to your skin and leave it for 15 minutes. Rinse off with normal water. Repeat twice daily.

  • Potatoes contain enzyme called catecholase that has the ability to bleach the skin and lighten the skin tone.
  • Cut the potato into pieces and add few drops of water on the exposed side. Rub it on the affected area for a few minutes and then rinse off with lukewarm water. Repeat this 3-4 times a day for about a month.

 

Apple Cider Vinegar

Aloe vera

 

  • Aloe vera is a natural cleansing agent and it helps reduce spots.
  • Mix 2 tablespoons of aloe vera gel and half a tablespoon of honey. Apply the mixture on your skin and leave it on for 20 minutes. Wash off with lukewarm water. Repeat once daily for about two weeks.
